Manipulating the Variable: Denim

What is one article of clothing every girl has in her closet?
A pair of jeans of course! But denim should not just be used for jeans, it has many (adorable) uses in other areas of the closet as well. I love the versatility of denim, it goes with everything and comes in so many different pieces. But of all the styles I'm a sucker for a cool pair of overalls. What is your favourite way to wear denim? Today's post will focus on one aspect of denim: jeans.

Let's start with how to pick the right pair of jeans. We live in a world where the amount of denim on the market is ridiculous. It takes an insurmountable amount of time and patients to sift through all the options available and find the perfect pair of jeans. I'm hoping you can use these tips to help you find that perfect pair!

1 // Find your favourite style, here is a great article on what jean styles are the most flattering on every body type. Personally, I have short legs and a very long torso, therefore I prefer mid rise jeans to create the illusion of long(er) legs.

2 // Try on different store's jeans. There really is no standard for sizing when it comes to denim, a 24 at the Gap may be equivalent to a 26 at H&M. I've even found that there can be differences in size between jeans that are "suppose to " be the same size and style. I also find that I like the fit of Gap and American Eagle jeans whereas I am not a huge fan of Zara and Forever 21 jeans on me. My absolute favourite brand fit-wise are Rich and Skinny Jeans. They just fit me so well!

3 // Be willing to get jeans tailored. In a perfect world we would be able to throw on a pair of jeans and they would fit perfectly. Too bad we don't live in a perfect world. Sometimes it's a waist that needs to be taken in or the pant legs need to be shortened. A few stitches here and there can make the difference between a good pair of jeans and a great pair.

4 // Mind the rips. Ripped jeans can look so fresh with a white tee, or grunge with a flannel. Make sure that the rips are not too crazy. My rule of thumb, if your jeans are missing more than 1/3 of their fabric due to the rips, they are too shredded.

5 // Beware the stretch. Stretchy jeans can be great! They look as sharp as a regular pair of jeans, but they feel like leggings. Problem, stretch fabric can lead to some serious bagging. Who else has put on a brand new pair of jeans that fit like a glove, but by the end of the day they feel two sizes to big (especially in the knees). The best way to avoid baggage, is to find jeans that are made from a thicker, stiffer denim.

6 // Don't be afraid to experiment! Try on as many pairs of jeans as you please. If you think about it, the more you try on the more likely you are to find the perfect pair. Also, do not fear colour. Coloured jeans are so fun and can really add a little flair to any outfit! But be careful with peach. If you're not careful it can look like you're not wearing any pants at all! It happened to me...

Well, I hope you enjoyed this post and will use it to help you find that perfect pair of jeans!
